What is Kicap Manis?

Kicap manis (or some spell it as kecap manis) is a sweet sauce used on most Malay dishes either as a condiment, marinade, dipping sauce or as part of a recipe’s sauce. Some brands we recommend and use are Habhal’s Kicap Manis (Soya bean sweet sauce) and if you want something sweeter/thicker, go for ABC’s Heinz Kicap Manis instead.

Can I use other sauce(s) as an alternative to kicap manis?

Yes, you definitely can! There are other sauces you can use such as dark soy sauce combined with a dash of light soy sauce to balance out that umami flavour for this sweet sauce egg recipe!

How to make Telur Masak Kicap

1. Fry eggs

The main star in this dish: fried eggs of course! I don’t know about you but we love our sunny side up eggs with crusty and golden edges. Heat up a generous amount of oil and once the oil is hot, deep fry the eggs and this will only take a few minutes!

2. Make the sauce

In a pan, put in 2-3 tablespoons of oil and add the onions and ginger. Saute them until their soft/brown and add 1/4 cup (60ml) or kicap manis. Proceed to add in 1/4 cup (60ml) of water to create the sauce and slightly dilute it while retaining the right amount of sweetness.

3. Add the fried eggs to the sauce

The best part: Add the golden fried eggs into the sweet sauce and let it soak in all the sweetness by closing the lid for about 2 minutes – all done!
