Telur Dadar (Egg Omelette)
If you’re looking for a quick and budget-friendly meal, there is nothing easier to make than a classic telur dadar dish. This fluffy Malay egg omelette is popular across Southeast Asia. Other than that, it is (of course!) known for its crispy edges and savoury taste.
I always tell my friends – there is no secret to a perfect telur dadar. You only need to use basic ingredients such as eggs, salt, onion, spring onion and chilli for that extra kick!
Growing up, my mother will always cook this omelette dish because of how simple it is. Not only that, it pairs perfectly with a steaming bowl of nasi lemak, white rice or even eaten as is! It is definitely my ultimate quick egg recipe that turns simple ingredients into a flavourful side dish.
In this post, I’ll show you how to cook this kid-friendly crispy texture of telur dadar.

What is the meaning of telur dadar?
Telur simply means egg and dadar refers to how the egg is being cooked, which is pancake or omelette style.

- Spring onion
- Chilli (Bird’s eye or red chilli – to your preference!)
- Salt
How to make telur dadar
Crack 5 – 6 eggs into a bowl. Add a pinch of salt and cut spring onions to the egg. Optional but I usually love to add bird’s eye chilli to give that spicy kick! After that, whisk the ingredients and ensure that they are mixed well.
Heat up a pan with olive oil on medium heat. Wait for about 2 – 3 minutes for the pan to heat and then add the diced onion/shallots into the pan. My mom usually does this so that the onions is cooked and it blends nicely into the taste of the omelette when finally mixed in together.
Saute the onions well until they are cooked. Once the onions are translucent, add the egg mix into the pan and let it cook until the omelette is golden yellow. Now, use a spatula and slowly flip the egg and let is cook on the other side for about 3 minutes – done!
