Crispy Ayam Goreng Recipe

jump to recipe

How to make the yummiest 3-ingredients crispy ayam goreng recipe!

Growing up, crispy ayam goreng (fried chicken) has always been a staple dish in our family. It is known as the simplest dish to make that can easily pair well with a plate of white rice or a bowl of hot noodles. Not only that, but it also reminds me dearly of my childhood since this is homemade and my mum will always make this for us at any time of the day.

So how is this recipe different you ask? This simple fried chicken recipe I am sharing with you is also known as ayam goreng kunyit or ayam goreng kuning. Why kunyit and kuning, you ask? Well, it simply refers to the use of turmeric (the key ingredient) that gives that turmeric taste and yellowish marinated colour.

How to fry crispy ayam goreng?

It is straightforward. You only need hot oil ready to fry and a batch of marinated chicken.

How do you eat ayam goreng?

One of my favourite things about ayam goreng is that you can simply eat it with anything or on its own! I’d usually recommend having ayam goreng with either rice/noodle but if you choose to eat them as is, pair it with an amazing dipping sauce such as Japanese mayonnaise, sriracha.. anything that can elevate that delectable delight!

How long does chicken take to fry?

The key is ensuring that the oil is ready – hot and simmering. Personally, I’d recommend putting the oil on high heat for a good 3-5minutes. That way, the oil will start to simmer quicker and ready to use.

However, make sure that the heat is turned to medium when the oil is ready for cooking. Once the heat is turned to medium, you can safely place in the chicken to cook for a good 5 – 7 minutes.

Do you need milk to fry chicken?

While most recipes place milk/buttermilk etc as one of their key ingredients for the best fried chicken, we chose to share something that is simple to make with ready-on-hand ingredients. Plus, this is a recipe that my mum used to make the tastiest, homely ayam goreng that I will forever use for generations to come!

Ingredients you will need to make this ayam goreng:

  • Chicken Wings/Drumsticks/Drumettes: Depending on your choice of chicken parts, this recipe does not limit or confine the parts you want to use.
  • Turmeric powder: The star ingredient in this recipe – apart from giving that crispy texture and beautiful colour, little do you know that this powder creates WONDERS for so many things!
  • Salt: On top of texture, we want to ensure we can elevate the taste with salt
  • Oil: Since we are frying, a lot of oil is essential to get that crispy texture and taste

How do you prepare ayam goreng batter?

  • Heat up a small/medium size wok with oil at high heat
  • While waiting, wash the desired quantity of chicken to cook and ensure to let it dry fully before adding in the next ingredients
  • Once dry, add in a teaspoon of turmeric and salt each and mix them altogether! (Yes, it is that easy!)
